Residencies
The Camden
Head Pilot Station Residency Program is open to professional
Australian and international artists by invitation or application.
Three types of residency are available.
1.
Funded Community Arts Residencies
The Pilot
Station values the role of the arts in contributing to community
well-being and encourages proposals from artists who want
to undertake a residency of 1 - 4 weeks focused on working
with the community. Proposals which combine the community,
the arts and the Pilot Station’s and Camden Haven’s
natural environments are particularly encouraged.
Proposals
for a Community Arts Residency should be capable of attracting
funding for items such as travel, accommodation, communication
expenses, materials, artists fees, etc.
The Camden
Head Pilot Station will assess proposals for Community Arts
Residencies based on the proposal’s ability to:
- Enhance
the Pilot Station’s mission and goals
- Attract
funding and or sponsorship
- Be
undertaken within the residency time frame
- Benefit
the community with tangible, achievable project outcomes
2.
Subsidised Residencies
The Pilot
Station welcomes applications from artists for residencies
of 1 - 2 weeks where artists propose to spend most of the
time on their own creative work but are prepared to engage
with the community by offering one or more of the following:
- An
event open to the community such as a performance or a reading
- Educational
workshop(s)
- Open
studio day(s) with talks about their work
- Other
community activities proposed by the artist
A reduced
rental rate may be negotiated for subsidised residencies.

Gillian Hand
Book Artist and Print-Maker
Years of traversing the many and varied landscapes of textiles led Gillian Hand into her current incarnation as a book artist and print-maker. For many years Gillian focussed on traditional approaches such as embroidery, weaving, knitting and quilt-making, before turning her craft to the turning pages of books and the multidimensional promise of prints.
More recently Gillian completed a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Western Sydney, and was a recipient of the Dean's Medal. During the process, she turned a creative corner, shifting away from textiles and into working with the fibres of paper as a book artist. The process, she says, utilises many of the same surface development techniques, with stitching, folding and other construction techniques being used in book arts.
