Camden Haven High School and Lady Elliott Island Project
We were able to secure a Grant from Transport NSW which has enabled the Marine Studies comparison course at Camden Haven High School to be completed for this year. This Year 11 and 12 Course completes comparison studies on our local rock platform at Wash House Beach at Camden Head and the rock and marine environment at Lady Elliott Island. In depth study of the Great Barrier Reef is also conducted at this time. This is a fantastic course and has motivated a number of students to take on tertiary environmental studies following their HSC.
At the time of writing Camden Haven High School students are finalising their report and feedback. Dr Deb Geronimi wrote in a recent email
“The students undertook coral reef health surveys and collected marine debris etc. They also attended lectures on shark biology and plastic pollution. They saw amazing marine life (White Tip Reef Sharks, Black Tip Reef Sharks, Eagle rays and dolphins).
The year 12 class have made another video documentary of the trip. To view video click here.
Without this Grant this type of in depth study would not be financially possible for these students and for a number this course is a major source of engagement with the school.
Dr Geronimi is in discussion with us about the next stages of the program which includes continuing the in depth study of our Wash House Beach Rock Platform
